Eau Claire police and UW-Eau Claire officials are conducting separate investigations into two alleged sexual assaults at an off-campus fraternity house.
The assault complaints stem from alleged incidents during the fall semester at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house at 1404 State St., Eau Claire police Lt. Gerald Staniszewski said.
The incidents involve two victims and two suspects. "They're two separate cases," Staniszewski said.
All parties involved have been cooperative and this is not an investigation of the fraternity itself, he said.
Evidence has been sent to the state crime lab, and police hope to forward lab results and police reports to the Eau Claire County district attorney's office in the next two weeks, Staniszewski said.
In an e-mail sent Tuesday morning to students, faculty and staff, Beth Hellwig, UW-Eau Claire's vice chancellor for student affairs, said the university is cooperating with the police investigation.
"UW-Eau Claire takes very seriously any allegations of sexual assault or violation of university policies," she said.
Hellwig said she has assigned Brian Carlisle, the university's dean of students, "with conducting an internal investigation of allegations against individual students and organizations and — based on his findings — pursuing appropriate disciplinary action."
Nick Lund, president of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at UW-Eau Claire, issued the following statement concerning the investigations:
"The members of Phi Gamma Delta are very concerned by the possibility that a visitor at our house was the victim of a sexual assault. We will cooperate with the police and any other authorities in the investigation of this allegation."
Hellwig is asking anyone with information or knowledge of the assaults to call the dean of students office at 715-836-5626, the university police confidential tipster line at 715-855-5555 or Eau Claire police at 715-839-4983.
