The operations of the Vanderbilt chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha have been suspended, according to a statement from its national organization. As of Sunday, Nov. 10, chapter members have been prohibited from representing the fraternity, displaying any of the organization’s emblems or symbols and gathering in the name of Lambda Chi Alpha.
Lambda Chi was previously under probation as a result of hazing allegations and alcohol-related violations that came to light in February earlier this year.
“The university supports the decision of the national board of Lambda Chi Alpha and will work with them to establish a plan for the chapter to return to campus in the future,” said Director of Greek Life Kristin Shorter in a statement.
The university is working with Lambda Chi to produce a “Memorandum of Understanding,” stating both parties' intention to have the fraternity ultimately return to campus. Lambda Chi Alpha’s national organization echoed that intention in its statement, saying, “Every attempt will be made to return to the Vanderbilt campus in the future.”
The reason for the suspension has not been disclosed by Vanderbilt or the Lambda Chi national organization. The future of the property and house Lambda Chi has occupied remains unclear.
“No decisions have been made about the chapter property at this time,” Shorter said.
The president of Vanderbilt’s Lambda Chi chapter had not responded to inquiries as of press time.
