HANCOCK -- According to FeedAmerica.org, one in six Americans goes hungry because they can’t make ends meet. But every year, seniors in the Keweenaw are given a helping hand in ensuring that doesn't happen. It’s all thanks to the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity’s annual Food Drive.
In eight hours, the Houghton fraternity chapter collected thousands of pounds of non-perishable food for Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly, an organization helping needy elderly in the Keweenaw.
“There is a great need,” stressed Alice Slusarzyk, an outreach employee with Little Brothers. “I bring their food bags and they're so happy. They really look forward to it.”
The fraternity distributed bags for the food ahead of time, then began traveling the Keweenaw at 8 a.m. Saturday morning for the donations left on doorsteps.
“It always makes you feel good,” admitted fraternity brother Alexander Ciesla.
This chapter collected approximately 7,000 pounds last year and are challenging themselves to hit 10,000 pounds of food this year.
“I have a lot of fun doing it,” stated Charles Hubbard, another Lambda Chi frat member.
And it isn't just this chapter; the entire Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity is pitching in nationwide. Since 1993, the fraternity raised more than 35-million pounds of food for the needy across North America.
