After every University of Nevada, Reno home football game, members of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and some friends enter the stands and start picking up trash left behind by football fans.
They gather hundreds of pounds of recyclables and donate them to the university’s recycling program.
“It helps the environment,” said Riley Snyder, a senior and member of the Nevada Alpha Chapter of the fraternity. “It touches on a lot of university communities.”
Phi Delta Theta — Nevada Alpha chapter is a traditional Greek fraternity that was founded in 1972 on the UNR campus.
Snyder said it has about 25 members and a strong focus on helping in the community.
“We’re involved in numerous community service and philanthropy events,” Snyder said.
The chapter raised $4,000 for ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, research, according to Snyder.
Snyder said after the UC Davis game, the chapter collected about 558 pounds of recyclables.
“If we weren’t out there, all that material would end up in a landfill or be taken by a scrapper looking to make money for himself,” Snyder said.
This is the second year the fraternity members have undertaken the recycling gig at Mackay Stadium. They report that everyone ends up having fun, though it can get a bit chilly after games in November.
Snyder said it’s important to let people know that frat guys volunteer their time for the university and their community. Kudos to Phi Delta Theta members for stepping up in the postgame for a good cause.
