POMONA >> A Cal Poly Pomona fraternity has been kicked off campus for hazing.
"The Office of Judicial Affairs has determined that Sigma Nu engaged in conduct that is in violation of the group's social probation, and additionally, took part in hazing activities that included underage drinking, provision of alcohol to minors and coerced activities," a university news release, issued Thursday, reads in part.
"The chapter also obstructed the investigation by providing false information and concealing information through the course of the investigation," it also said.
The university and the national office of Sigma Nu Fraternity, based in Lexington, Va., jointly suspended the Kappa Gamma chapter of Sigma Nu, which has been active at the university since 1982.
The chapter is suspended through 2018 and can begin holding meetings, sponsoring events and recruiting new members on July 1, 2019, at the earliest. In the meantime, members cannot even wear or carry items displaying the Sigma Nu name or insignia.
"We have made it clear to students in a multitude of ways that hazing is illegal, and we have zero tolerance for it in any manner," Doug Freer, Cal Poly's vice president of student affairs said in the news release. "While many organizations on campus have done good work to reflect on and modify old practices,

this organization unfortunately chose to go in a different direction. As such, they are no longer recognized at the university."
Individual members of the Kappa Gamma chapter are going through the disciplinary process and could face suspension.
The national headquarters of Sigma Nu could not be reached immediately for comment Thursday afternoon. The fraternity runs an annual anti-hazing campaign on Twitter every August and September.
Sigma Nu now has 171 active chapters and colonies at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, according to the fraternity's website, and has inducted more than 230,000 members since its founding in 1869 at Virginia Military Institut
