They have scrapped their regional governers model, and have formed the position of Counselor, who reports to the Director of Volunteer Development. A Counselor acts as a regional manager of a group of Chapter Advisory Boards. As such, he can limit his travel as necessary, and focus on what he can do well.
This model has three key elements:
1. The head is a man with volunteer experience, having come from a charity that primarily dealt with mature, settled adults.
2. The Counselors pick their scope of management - they are not saddled with a big geography (and a big travel bill). They can focus and do what they do well.
3. The focus is on chapter advising, not house corporations. A much broader collection of alumni will be involved, not just those interested in being a landlord.
Although they have scrapped the regional governer model, they still have regional leadership conferences, one of which meets 20 miles from my house next month.
