It'd be easier to raise funds, to do projects like this at all fraternity houses, if Congress would make donations tax deductible. Thanks Tom for the post.

T J remember when I used to visit the old TKE house. God it was a grand dame house but so far off of campus.
The new house looks fantastic and seems that GLOs are much stronger there than when I was there.
Still, the Soros do not have houses, still in dorms!

One trick you can do is to separate out deductible and non-deductible parts of the house. Anything "educational" is deductible - study rooms, computer center, etc. Put a whiteboard in your dining room to make it educational space. (You might want to make sliding panels to hide it for more elegant dining).
Have your national foundation channel the deductible gifts back to your chapter. At my job, I have a few bucks taken out of every paycheck, and it goes to Acacia's foundation. My job only does this for a 501c3, but I can call my foundation and have my contribution go to the educational part of my chapter.

If the IRS checks the Foundations, it can be painful (per this post below): www.insidehighered.com/news/2012/....nity-foundationThe Internal Revenue Service has revoked the tax-exempt status of an organization affiliated with a Bucknell University fraternity, ruling that a foundation designed to support educational and charitable activities at a college fraternity must do more than help the Greek organization maintain and operate its housing facility. For the better part of a decade, the Graystone University Housing Corp. operated as a nonprofit organization affiliated with the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity chapter at Bucknell. It existed, according to its articles of incorporation, "exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, including the provision of lodging, dining, library, technological and related educational facilities for students." The organization was established in 2003, at a time when Bucknell's Phi Gamma Delta chapter needed to renovate its house, says Ted Groom, a lawyer for the organization. Supporters of the fraternity knew they'd have an easier time raising money to upgrade the facility if donations were tax exempt. ---- One time they audited the TKE Foundation, and got so detailed that they wanted to know what happened to a stapler that the Foundation had bought.

ARRG, does this suck or what?
It is hard enough for we as Social Greeks to keep going for our betterment!
Oh, the kinder IRS, right?
That is why I fight for the two bills in Congress to give we Alumni tax breaks. Write you legislatures and bitch like hell to get it done. It is there, it needs to be voted upon!!!
