Tom,
That's a whole subject for discussion on its own. For a long time DKE was intentionally kept small then it did a lot of expansion and then some of those new chapters did not work out as well as had been hoped. Also, a lot of old chapters ran into PC problems at very liberal universities. DEKEs do not as a rule keep a low profile so as an institution DKE acts as a lightning rod and is reluctant to back down to BS pressure.

dekeguy, that is what I admire, the not backing down from B S pressure, ,kudos to them!
The old adage, grow or expire comes to mind? True or not who really knows? I am sure DKE does have a fantastic cash balance and uses it wisely.
Sounds like me in my younger days when I was told the local I started was crap and would not be taken by a National Organization.
When I was looking to find a organization, LXA was low on my radar as being to new compared to THE OLD line GLos. A TKE behind my back contacted LXA and told them they were missing a good bunch of guys.
To say the way it turned out, it was a match made in heaven and the rest is history. We were the only ones Chartered in 1969. We also got the LX Zeta (Chapter) designation. I should say back then expansion was on hold period. I should know because I got a lot of rejections from many OLD LIKE GLOs.
Oh well, I be happy!
Long live DKE and LXA!
