Tau Kappa Epsilon
Sigma Mu Sigma was founded as a Masonic Fraternity (like Acacia, all members had to be Masons) for students a a “normal school” (teachers college). Acacia was limited to accredited four year colleges, and SMS provided a complement, in the same vein as AES sororities.
In 1935, three became TKE as the first fraternity “merger”. These three were originally Square and Compass. In 1967, One chapter became Acacia (the “original” SMS).
Sig Ep
In 1938, Theta Upsilon Omega (11 chapters) merged with Sig Ep - four overlaps.
Lambda Chi Alpha
In 1939, Lambda Chi Alpha (77 chapters) absorbed Theta Kappa Nu (49 chapters). Much of the heritage was preserved and Theta Kappa Nu elements were incorporated into the crest and ritual of LXA. This was a successful merger, the largest fraternity merger, and most of the chapters survived. There was overlap at 21 campuses
Theta Chi
In 1942, absorbed Beta Kappa bringing in 16 chapters.
Phi Kappa Theta
1959 - Probably the most “equal” merger resulted in 63 chapters. Two Catholic fraternities - Phi Kappa and Theta Kappa Phi - joined with a few overlaps.
Theta Xi
In 1962 21 chapters joined Theta Xi. There were no overlaps. (7 chapters at non accredited schools did not join and continued as Kappa Sigma Kappa)
Zeta Beta Tau
ZBT is the product of four mergers. Phi Alpha merged with Phi Sigma Delta in 1959, forming 47 chapters. Kappa Nu merged with Phi Epsilon Pi in 1961.
In 1969, Phi Sigma Delta merged with ZBT
In 1970, Phi Epsilon Pi joined with ZBT
Pi Lambda Phi
Like ZBT, Pi Lam is the product of multiple mergers.
In 1941, Phi Beta Delta - 16 chapters (3 overlap) merged with Pi Lam
In 1960, The 8 active chapters of Beta Sigma Tau merged with Pi Lam.
In 1972, Six chapters (one overlap) of Beta Sigma Rho merged with Pi Lam.
Phi Sigma Kappa
1985 was the last merger, where all but 7 Phi Sigma Epsilon joined PSK. Presently 15 remain as part of PSK, The seven (four remaining active) became Phi SIgma Phi national, with 11 chapters.
