THIBODAUX — A 19-year-old student was killed Saturday when he fell from a hayride and was run over during homecoming festivities at Nicholls State University, police said Sunday (2010).
He was one of six people killed on local roads this weekend.
In Terrebonne, four Vandebilt high-school students died early Sunday morning in a crash that occurred on La. 182 in Bayou Blue as they returned from Saturday's LSU game.
And in Assumption, one person was killed and four others — two women and two children — were seriously injured late Sunday when their car ran off La. 70 and flipped several times, ejecting all five occupants.
In Thibodaux, Nathan Trepagnier of New Orleans was on a trailer being pulled by a 2006 Dodge pickup driven by 42-year-old Eric Zeringue of Schriever, police said. He fell off the trailer, into Bowie Road and was run over by the trailer that had carried him, said Master Trooper Bryan Zeringue of State Police Troop C.
The wreck happened about 2:40 p.m. Saturday as the hayride headed east on Bowie Road.
Trepagnier was taken by ambulance to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Alcohol tests, required by state law in all fatal crashes, were administered. Eric Zeringue had no detectable alcohol, according to breath tests administered at the crash site.
Blood was drawn from Trepagnier for testing. Those results are pending.
No charges were filed, and troopers are continuing their investigation.
Witnesses told investigators Trepagnier may have been trying to re-position himself when he lost his balance and fell, Bryan Zeringue said. The truck that pulled the trailer was “going real slow,” the trooper added.
