Eight young men are facing drug-related charges in connection with a raid at fraternity house in Geneseo on Friday afternoon.
Geneseo police officers and Livingston County sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant at the Phi Sigma Xi fraternity, 72 Center St., about 12:45 p.m. Friday, said Geneseo Police Chief Eric Osganian. The fraternity, also known as PHIG, is affiliated with the State University College at Geneseo, he said.
He said officers had received a tip that illegal narcotics were in the fraternity house, which is off-campus in a neighborhood in the village.
While executing the search warrant, officers seized cocaine, marijuana and a legally registered handgun, all found in the house, he said.
Three fraternity members who live at the house were among the eight men arrested:
* Raymond Hatfield, 22, of Ontario, Wayne County, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony, and fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor.
* Jaime Urteaga, 20, of Rye, Westchester County, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, a felony, and fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana.
* Brian Sullivan, 23, of Bay Shore, Suffolk County, was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.
Two men visiting last weekend — Kirk Pietruszkiewicz, 23, and Randy Leedham, 24, both of Kings Park, Suffolk County — were each charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana.
Three other men at the fraternity house Friday were also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, Osganian said.
Hatfield, Urteaga, Sullivan, Pietruszkiewicz and Leedham were arraigned in Geneseo Village Court and remanded to the Livingston County Jail. All five men posted bail over the weekend, according to jail deputies.
Additional charges are pending, Osganian said.
Friday’s incident was not the first time fraternity members were in trouble with police. In 2008, police investigated reports of underage drinking and hazing between October and December 2008, Osganian said.
Ultimately, the fraternity’s pledge master David Utnick pleaded guilty to second-degree hazing, a violation, and was sentenced to community service.
