Here is a article that talks about and discusses this 60+ year old man, Ed Rensi, former CEO of McDonalds corp who joins Delta Upsilon as some alumni. Not to mention personally I find that pretty interesting yet not traditional . GIven that interesting story, what do you think of that? Perhaps your chapter had someone who served in the military for some time before enrolling as a college freshmen somewhere in their 20s, older then some of us www.thelantern.com/campus/former-mcdonald-s-president-ceo-joins-osu-fraternity-1.2090564

Peter, thank you for finding this out and posting.
Yes, it does happen and usually for a person who shows he is willing to work with a local chapter or is a person of outstanding character.
My Fraternity has at one time or another initiated some via alumni initiation.
Harry S. Truman being one of the notables.
We just initiated 2 younger sons of an Alumni whose Brother was a member along with his son who is our current president. He is the one who donated the money to not only build a new house but also spent money to add the new addition to it making it hte biggest house on campus.
One gentleman was given an honory membership as he and his wife became patrons of the chapter and spent a lot of time with the guys and became second school parents to them.
We also have initiated members of schools teachers who become an adviser for the chapter.
While these are not given out lightly, many members in Fraternities/Sororities have gone on and become outstanding members of our GLOs.
It is something that is not given lightly. I wanted a friend of mine to be given that honor but he was not able to spend enough time so I decided that he was just not right even though he is my best friend.
One of AGD Honory members became one of their best National Officers/President for years and helped them expand greatly.
So, yes it happens and I would welcome them into the bond of any GLO that they joined.
Good point!!! Good question!

Gotcha. I see how it works I will admit that though I have heard of honorary membership, I have never known that it could work like that.

A year or so before anyone heard of Mike Huckabee, he was initiated into TKE at U. Ark. (maybe Ark. St.) where his son was an officer. Maybe he'll be the second TKE pres.

Also, Steve Ramos the current CEO of TKE is an honorary. He is a former IBM exec. and was inititated at the time he was hired as the CEO of the fraternity.
