SigEp, known on campus as “The Gentleman’s Frat,” launched an initiative this year that brings local merchants into chapter meetings to make presentations on topics ranging from cooking lessons to wardrobe tips. While some Yalies not involved with the fraternity said they are amused at the idea of “gentleman lessons,” Hooks said the presentations are intended to teach the men of SigEp to achieve a “sound mind, sound body,” in keeping with the fraternity’s philosophy of balance in members’ personal lives. www.yaledailynews.com/news/2007/nov/01/sigep-schooled-in-fine-culture/Attachments:

Great idea by Sig Ep after the tough times they have had over hazing episodes.

Sig Ep - "the gentleman's frat" - at Yale? ?? This is a joke, right? Considering the really ancient fraternities who draw from a catchment pool where the term gentleman is not set off with quotation marks I suspect this generated howls of laughter from the other well established houses who feed into Skull and Bones and one or two other similar entities. One does not take "gentleman lessons", one either is or is not. Sorry to sound like a real son of a bitch but Yale is very much a sui generis sort of place where what might seem to the rest of the world as ancient history is seen at Yale as current events. Unconscious but deeply ingrained sense of place in the pecking order permiates the place like the air one breathes. Great if one is at the top of the packing order, less so if one is not.

Peter, I see you found this ironic to say the least. I don't know if this is in reference to just SigEp who over the years had a major problem with hazing. So maybe anything they can do to smooth off any rough edges would be a plus. But, with the early beginings of the Ivy Schools when only the well to do gentry could afford to go were also trained and brought up with proper manners as their life style. Turning a GLO chapter into gentlemen may sound funny, at least it is a step in a correct direction, LOL! (Pigs ear into a silk purse) Right? ;D God knows anything would help, hopefully! LOL!
